The Peer Support Centre, together with the support of the MHC Students’ Association, strives to educate, support, and improve the quality of life for the students of MHC, while maintaining the Concept of “Peers helping Peers”.
The Centre was officially opened to students in 1997, with the intent to provide services to college students for years to come. A trained Peer Support Team.
Peer Support Team members are trained in Crisis Intervention, and attend ongoing professional workshops during their term with the Centre. All team members sign confidentiality contracts to ensure the anonymity of students seeking Peer Support Services. Any student who wishes to volunteer with the Peer Support Centre should contact the Student’s Association.
The Peer Support Centre is a proud member of BACCHUS Canada, the alcohol and peer education group for post secondary institutions. TEAM CLEAR has been established to assist in the awareness of alcohol responsibility.
Peer Support Centre Services
Support: The PSC team is available to students looking for a nonjudgmental peer to talk to. This includes all concerns – big or small. Students should feel free to stop in for no other reason than to meet someone new.
Referrals: The PSC team can refer students to community agencies/ professional who specialize in the issue at hand. The PSC also is a referral for the new on campus Health Centre.
Awareness Events: The PSC will be holding a variety of Awareness days/weeks to increase students’ knowledge of issues that effect them. These events will include displays, professional, confidential service. information packages, guest speakers, games/activities, etc.
Food Bank: It is the intent of the PSC to provide needy students with a one day supply of food, on a one time. All attempts will be made to ensure that the students are made aware of other community resources.
Resources: A collection of helpful books and pamphlets are available and can be accessed by students doing presentation or reports for their classes.
